Limiting Beliefs and Values

“You can do it.  You just have to believe.”

Could it be that it’s all so simple?

Uh…not quite.

Sure, you can succeed if you believe and IF you don’t have limiting and/or conflicting beliefs and values.

You are probably familiar with the fact that typical expressions like- I can’t, I have to, it’s hopeless, etc. are extremely limiting.  These expressions deal with the limiting beliefs of necessity and impossibility.

When they dominate a person’s thinking, feelings of not having a choice are created.  A lack of choice undermines autonomy, self-efficacy, and self-motivation.

To knockdown limiting beliefs turn phrases like “I can’t” into “If this were possible, how would I do it?” or “If I could imagine that there is a way to do this, what would it be?”

Turn phrases like “I have to” into “What would happen if I didn’t?” or “If I didn’t have to, what would I do?”

Quite frequently when you come up with the answer to those two questions it will lead you to “But I can’t/couldn’t do that.” That’s when you use the techniques I just gave you for dealing with “I can’t.”

Conflicting beliefs and values are things that many people aren’t even consciously aware of having.

“I believe that I can be a millionaire.” But…”I believe money is the root of all evil." (Which is not what the scripture says by the way).
